The Big XII Track & Field Championships will be held in Boulder at Potts Field on May 16-18. I will be acting as the volunteer coordinator and helping facilitate the meet. If you would like to become involved as a volunteer on Friday, Saturday or Sunday please contact me and I will place your name on my contact list. Specific details are listed below. We will be filling positions that range from ticket takers, to raking the sand in the long jump pits to monitoring the warm up areas. So get a first hand look at one of the best track meets in the country. Contact me Richard.Castro@colorado.edu or 303-449-6650. The Sunday group run moves to 8 AM on June 1st. Until then it continues to meet at 9:00 AM as always at the First National Bank of Colorado (3033 Iris Ave, rear parking lot). We have PowerBar recovery drinks and muffins, cookies and cinnamon rolls from the Great Harvest Bread Co. The term for our current refreshment coordinators Bill Allen (ballen@boulderco.com) and Peter Genuardi (petergenuardi@gmail.com) will expire with the Bolder Boulder (Sunday May 25th). If you would like to help out the BRR and take a turn picking up our bakery goods or bringing the water coolers get in touch with me, Rich Castro, or speak to Peter and Bill. Please invite fellow runners to join us for a go as you please social run any Sunday. The run travels east to the Cottonwood Trails and allows runners to choose their own routes, by doing an out and back after reaching Jay Road or the Diagonal Highway or going through Waterstone and taking 51st Street back toward Boulder.
Most of you are aware that the Boulder Road Runners will celebrate their 30th anniversary as a running club this year. I am compiling a history of the club and hope to present it in our newsletter later this year. Many of our current traditions had an early start, such as the Sunday group runs. They started out as “fun runs”, alternating between Parkside Park on Kalmia and Folsom on the first and third Sundays and the South Boulder Rec Center on the second and fourth Sundays. We were a very social club hosting many of the local races, holding a running camp at Devil’s Thumb Ranch along with monthly meetings and potlucks. Lots of great memories have been accumulated during these three decades, so if you want to share some, please e-mail with your thoughts and memories. To commemorate our 30 years we will be hosting another 100 Mile Relay (August 16). I will lead off the relay at a very early hour and want to invite all of our original members to join me in the opening legs. Speed is not part of criteria and walkers are welcome. Eleven or twelve hours later we will anchor the final legs with the children of the Boulder Road Runners and in some cases maybe even grandchildren. Tom & Joyce LeMire are coordinating the efforts to contact our original members, so if you have interest in participating or contact information on these folks, you may call them at 303-554-7489 or tom_lemire@yahoo.com or joycelemire@yahoo.com.
The next First Monday of the Month BRR Social at the Walnut Brewery is scheduled for May 5, 2008, which I believe is also Cinco de Mayo. I have invited Tera Moody a member of Team Colorado in the 2007 Bolder Boulder and the 5th finisher at the recent Women’s Olympic Marathon Trials to be our special guest that evening. I trust that we will be able continue the monthly gatherings through actively soliciting corporate sponsors so if you have a business that would like to sponsor one of our monthly social gatherings please contact me, Rich Castro.
The First Monday Social is designed to have runners of all abilities meet for more than a run. Our meeting place is the Walnut Brewery at 1123 Walnut Street in Boulder. We have decided to embrace the concept of having local businesses and corporate groups join us in hosting the event. We hope to be able to extend the idea of a monthly social gathering to encompass the entire local Boulder running community.
Larry Avery and the Avery Brewing Co. have added a Second Monday to our social calendar. Larry Avery and the Avery Brewing Company provide the post run food. So if you’re looking for a run and some adult refreshments join the group at 5 PM at the Brewery, 5763 Arapahoe Ave. in Boulder. With the time change this makes for a great time to meet new runners and experience a slightly different area of Boulder. Avery’s big beers can be previewed on their website, www.averybrewing.com.
We have a number of club activities on the calendar this spring so get yourself involved in the Boulder running community and invite other runners to support the sport we all love. The volunteer coordinators for each of these events is an active club members so contact them directly if you wish to be a course marshal at any of these listed races.

Looking for a low key group to train with throughout the year? I lead and coach a group that meets Tuesday/Thursday at Flatiron Athletic Club at 7:00 AM. FAC does offer BRR members a nice discounted rate to join as well. They have great facilities and are only 3 kilometers away from the CU track and the new cinder 800 meter loop or the South Boulder Creek Trail. FAC also offers BRR members a punch card so they can join the group on an occasional basis and have a place to stretch and shower after the workout; contact Chad or Nick at FAC and be sure to have your BRR membership card with you. On Saturdays there is a scheduled long run from the Lefthand Trail Head parking area on Neva Rd. (one mile east of U.S. 36) and the entry road to Lake Valley Golf Course. The area offers country roads, open space trails and paved roads and plenty of hills. We are currently meeting at 7:30 AM. We will also be scheduling some alternative Bolder Boulder training sessions designed to get folks familiar with the course and be ready to run their best on Memorial Day. Contact me if you have questions or want more information. You can call me at home at 303-449-6650 or e-mail Richard.Castro@colorado.edu.
If you would like to receive e-mails about BRR news and running related activities just e-mail me at Richard.Castro@colorado.edu and I will place you on my club group e-mail list.
All the best. See you on the roads...
