Abbott World Marathon Majors Age Group Championships at Chicago – Oct 8

Boulder Road Runners members Paul Hughes and Roger Sayre ran in the 65-69 age group, and former member Tim Degrado (who was with BRR in 2021 and 2022) ran in the 60-64 age group for the Abbott World Marathon Majors Age Group Championships at the Chicago Marathon on October 8.

In the men’s 65-69 championship race, Hughes was hoping to improve on his 2nd place from 2022 in London 2022. With splits of 1:26:51 and 1:29:59 to finish in 2:56:50, Hughes was 2nd again in 2023. After the race he indicated that he was pleased with the result: “I went out hard in Chicago and began to feel the effects earlier than usual. I contemplated ‘easing back’ for the remainder of the race, but realizing that there were friends and family following my every split time live on the marathon app; I knew I should have to dig deep.”

Sayre was hoping to finish in under 3 hours, and join the list of those who have spanned more than 40 year between their first sub 3 marathon and latest. Fewer than 20 runners worldwide have ever accomplished this. Holding onto 3:00 pace through 22 miles (1:30:16 at the half), Sayre was hampered by leg cramps over the last 4 miles of the race and finished in 3:05:20, which was good enough for 6th in the age division and 2nd American.

Degrado, now living in Wisconsin, was 3rd last year in the World Marathon Major’s 60-64 age group at the championship race. This year he ran the Leadville 100 just 6 weeks before Chicago and was not fully recovered. After running through the half in 1:26, he developed digestive issues and had to slow down and finished in 3:23.

Flavio De Simone also competed in the Chicago Marathon and finished in 02:39:38
