Highlights from the M60 Team

USATF Masters Grand Prix

USATF Masters 10 mile, Sacramento, April 2:  In addition to taking 2nd in the team race, in the age grading Roger Sayre was 3rd male overall in age grading with a 92.24%, and Jack Pottle ran an age-graded PR at 86.34%, placing 16th, and Adam Feerst scored an 82.1%.

John Blaser

John Blaser takes 2nd place in the Mens 65-69 age group at the USATF Masters 1/2 Marathon in Syracuse NY.

USATF Masters ½ marathon, Syracuse, NY, April 16:  Only two from the team made the trip but made the best of it. Roger Sayre was 1st in the 65-69 age group with a 1:24:46 (age grade 88.3%, 3rd overall) and new team member John Blaser took 2nd in the age group with 1:34:36.

USATF Masters 10K, Dedham, MA April 30:  Blaser was the lone BRR representative in the 60-69 division and he nabbed another podium finish with a 42:03. Blaser is now ranked 5th overall in the 65-69 age group, after only running three of five races on the USATF Masters Grand Prix circuit!

At this juncture, the BRR men’s team has competed as a full team in just three of the races and have scored 225 points to rank 5th place. All of the teams ahead have run four or five races so far. If BRR can field full teams for the remaining races the team will move up in the standings.

Hughes Runs at the World Masters Indoor (‘non-stadia’) Championships

Paul Hughes spent much of the winter in South Africa centered his training on the World Masters Athletics (WMA) indoor championships in Torun, Poland. Unfortunately, he came down with a respiratory virus while traveling to Poland, and had to scratch from the indoor 3000 and 8K cross country (the latter a ‘non-stadia’ event). By the end of the week Paul had recovered enough to run the half marathon, where he ran 1:25:38, which was 4th place for the men’s 65-69 age group.

May Road Races

Hughes bounced back over the month of April and indicated that he had some good training weeks. On May 7 he ran the Colorado Marathon in 2:58:43. He would have (officially) won his age division, but exceeded that by placing 2nd overall in the Grand Masters (50+) category. Hughes’ time also eclipsed the Colorado 65-69 age group record (set by BRR’s Heath Hibbard in 2018) by 20 minutes.

At the Colfax Marathon on May 21, Jack Pottle ran 3:25:32 to win the 60-69 age group by 9 minutes. At age 68! Jay Survil nabbed a 2nd age group place in the half marathon with a 1:36:21.

New American Record

Roger Sayre traveled to Grand Rapids Michigan on May 13 for the Amway Riverbank Run 25K and ran 1:40:41, 58 seconds under the existing American 65-69 age group record set by Alex Ratelle in 1991.
